Fear:
To me, fear is a challenge. Something that I can overcome or defeat. When I overcome a fear I feel a wave of accomplishment and I feel really good. (Which in part is due to adrenaline from the fear in the first place). If you are struggling with overcoming a fear I reccomend “micro-dosing” it, exposure therapy style.
So for instance if you have a fear of snakes start small by learning about them. Research and become familiar with the breeds, learn which are dangerous and why, what to do if you are in an emergency snake situation, etc… eventually your confidence on the subject will grow and you will slowly overcome the fear and replace it with confidence.
A lot of the time we fear the unknown which is super reasonable and probably why we have survived as a species as long as we have. Fear and anxiety are normal human functions and we need them, but we don’t need to let them be in total control of us.
Self-doubt:
Self-doubt is a completely different critter, it can be debilitating- stopping you before you even start. In my experience it is difficult to navigate self doubt but I find it helpful to examine my negative thoughts and twist them into something more positive.
For instance I might think: “I’ll never be an author I can’t finish this book I’ve been writing.” but when I notice myself speaking poorly about myself I can change that thought to sound more like: “I’m not an author yet, but I’m working hard on the book I’m writing.”
This is all our first time living and we will all be learning and growing through every part of life weather we like it or not. So be kind to yourselves and do things that are scary or hard.
Time spent learning and growing is never wasted.
